Glens Falls was a halfway point for the French and Indian War and the Revoliutionary War between Fort Edward and Fort William Henry. The area has gone through many names including Chepontuc, meaning difficult place to get around, "Great Carrying Place" by the Iroquois. In 1766, the Quakers established a permanent settlement and named the town Wing's Falls for Abraham Wing the leader of the group. In 1788, the town was transferred to Colonel Johannes Glen for either collection of a debt from a card game or for hosting a party for friends and changed the name to Glen's Falls.
