Green Island is a COTErminus town-village located in Albany County, meaning geographically, the town and village share the same boundaries. With a population of approximately 2,620. Green Island is also the smallest town, by area, in New York State, covering 0.7 of a square mile, but as we know, it is not the size of the town, but how it performs that matters.
Green Island was called Pachanhanit or Nehanenesick, and owned by the natives Amenhanit, Aepjen, and Wanapet until they sold it in 1665. Connected to the mainland when the South Branch of the Mohawk River was filled in during the construction of Interstate 787 in the 1960’s it was once an island and formerly known as Tibbett’s Island.
Green Island was a major manufacturing and transportation center in the mid 1800’s and early 1900’s. The Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad built its locomotive and car shops in 1842 in Green Island. In 1853 the Gilbert Car Company had a railroad car factory built in Green Island after their Troy location burned. Automobile manufacturing would soon become important to Green Island when Thomas Edison; whose General Electric plant in nearby Schenectady, and who frequently fished off the northern end of Green Island; introduced his friend, Henry Ford to the village. In 1922 Ford established The Ford Motor Company’s plant manufacturing radiators and springs near the town. The Ford plant served as Green Island's largest employer until it was closed in 1989
Green Island has also put forward a great effort to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for its children. Created in 1939, Paine Street Park contains a playground, sprinkler park, basketball courts, and a pavilion so that the children of Green Island have a safe place to play. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Center (Starbuck) Island was a popular place to play baseball. Babe Ruth was amongst the baseball stars that played there. That tradition is carried on to this day through the Green Island Little League.
Green Island continues to be a village of economic and cultural prosperity. Businesses currently in operation include Lydall-Manning (a paper company), Sealy (a plant that manufactures mattresses), Honeywell (which produces friction materials), Ross Valve, Silhouette Optical (eyewear), the Green Island Lanes (a bowling alley), the McNulty Funeral Home, a number of corner stores and hair salons and just a short drive from The Cote Insurance Agency.
