Lake George, formerly “Caldwell” was established in 1810 and carries the nickname “Queen of American Lakes”. 

There has always been speculation on whether the first non-Native American to discover  the large body of water was Samuel de Champlain in the 1600's who wrote in his journal about the lake but, did not name it or was it Father Isaac Jogues in 1646 who originally named the lake “Lac du Saint-Sacrement”? Either way, 110 years later “Lac du Saint-Sacrement” became a crucial region for the French and Indian War.

The British General Edward Braddock ordered Commander William Johnson to defeat the French soldiers holding post at Fort Saint-Frederic, while he traveled north, Johnson re-named Lac du Saint-Sacrement to Lake George.

Lake George is well known for all of their recreational activities. Lake George offers a wide variety of restaurants, village shopping, steamboat rides, beautiful beaches and the historical landmark of Fort William Henry. Lake George has many road markings to mark important sites, monuments in the parks honoring fallen war heroes and a steamboat company marking it's history, the Lac du Saint Sacrement.

Lake George's economy was predominately Millionaire's up until approximately the 1930's. Lake George was known for it's Millionaires Row on the west side of the lake. Millionaire's built their mansions and used the homes during the summer months. By the 1930's with income tax being introduced, the mansions became less sustainable and have now been torn down or turned into hotels. Lake George has now become a growing middle class area.
