The Village of Schuylerville is steeped in history. First settled by the Dutch in 1691 (with the original name of Fort Saratoga), its history goes back over 1200 years when the Mohawk Indians hunted and fished along the Hudson River and Fish Creek.
During the French and Indian Wars, the village was subject to raid parties. Fort Hardy Park was the site of the first major victory in the American Revolution when the British surrendered their troops to the Americans. Considered the Turning Point of the Revolution, this victory convinced the French to lend their support to the Americans which proved vital to the outcome of the war.
With its location near the Hudson River and Champlain Canal, Schuylerville became a salient mill village in both the linen and cotton industry. Resident fashion designer Ellen Curtis Demorest created the first mass-marketed paper pattern for the construction of clothing in the late 1800s.
During the 1800s, Schuylerville also became a part of both the suffrage and abolitionist movements. Many residents used their houses as stops on the Underground Railroad, where fugitives then continued north on the Champlain Canal and Hudson River.
When visiting:
There are several art galleries, shops and restaurants in downtown Schuylerville. There are also many parks located in and around the area. Fort Hardy Park is home to the annual Turning Point Parade. At the Lock 5 Champlain Canal Park, visitors can take a ride on a canal boat or get a glimpse of how the boats are raised and lowered in the lock.
The Hudson Crossing Park has many hiking trails, sensory trails, and a kayak launch. Stark’s Knob is home to one of America’s oldest science parks. Nearby Saratoga National Historical Park is the site of the Saratoga Battlefield, and stages re-enactments of the battle during certain times of the year. The historic Schuyler House and Saratoga Monument are also part of the National Park.
