The town of Waterford New York is situated at the south eastern corner of Saratoga County which puts it in a very desirable location. This is because it sits at the spot where the Hudson and Mohawk rivers meet.

Being on both the Mohawk and the Hudson rivers made the town of Waterford a great place for businesses to set up shop. Starting as early as the year 1831 The Cohoes falls, which is shared by the towns of Waterford and Cohoes and is located on the Mohawk River, was used as a source of power for multiple different industries in the area.

The largest industry to have used the falls for power was Harmony Mills which was, at its apex, the largest cotton manufacturer in the entire country. After the plant closed instead of attempting to make the falls a tourist destination, the towns leased the water flow rights to multiple power companies.

That doesn't mean that you cant visit the falls though, on the Cohoes side of the falls, the brand new Falls View Park has offered visitors a their first public view of the falls since 2011. That's not the only natural attraction in the town of Waterford though, Peebles island is a 190 acre island that attracts more than 100,000 visitors every year, which is almost as many visitors as the Cote Agency receives each year as well!

Natural beauty isn't the only interesting aspects of Waterford though. Did you know that Waterford is the oldest incorporated village in the whole US? History is a big part of Waterford, so big in fact that the New York Bureau of Historic Sites as well as the Bureau of Historic Preservation Field Services headquarters are located on Peebles Island within Waterford.

 

Waterford is a growing town with a flourishing economy. The town is home to the largest employer in Saratoga County, Momentive Performance Materials, which was previously a General Electric Silicone producer. That's not the only game in town though, the Mohawk Paper Mill is a successful paper manufacturer in Waterford and one of the areas largest grocery store chains has warehouses in the area.

 

Although the businesses within Waterford aren't a tourism draw, that doesn't mean there aren't any. The town is home to multiple different festivals that draw in tens of thousands of visitors each year. The most eventful of which is the annual Tugboat Roundup which is a three day festivals that takes place on the towns waterfront each September and has a large draw. The other festivals include Canal Fest, Steamboat Meet, and the towns newest addition, Dragon Boat. All these festivals play a large roll in the towns economy, and they sure are fun to attend!
