Albany County constitutes the central core of the Capital District of New York State, which comprises the Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, metropolitan areas. The region that would become Albany County was settled by French and then Dutch fur traders in the early 17th century after Henry Hudson voyaged up "La Grande Riviere" (later named the Hudson River) in his ship the Half Moon.

The County, as well as the city of Albany itself, derived its name from the then Duke of Albany in 1664, who later became James II of England. However, prior to being renamed to Albany, the settlement was originally known as Beverwyck when it was settled by dutch and french traders.

Being the capital city of the state of New York, Albany and Albany county play a huge roll within the state. Since Albany is the capital of the state, and is the seat of the county, and has its own city government, there are a lot of politics going on within the county leading to a large and still growing population as well as infrastructure. Just because Albany county is growing in infrastructure and housing, does not mean there is any lack of outdoor activities though.

You could spend multiple days exploring all of the beautiful parks situated right in Albany County. John Boyd Thacher State Park, Albany Pine Bush Preserve, and Thompson's Lake State Park are just a few examples.

If performing arts is more your speed, the Palace Theatre is a great place to see some of your favorite acts from throughout the years. The famous theater hosts over 150 events each and every year, you can see anything from concerts, to Broadway shows, or even classic movies at this beloved historic theater. If one performing arts center isn't enough, don't worry because Albany boasts two more iconic theaters, The Egg, and the Times Union Center.

So named for its shape, The Egg houses two different theaters within which both host performances similar to that of the Palace Theatre. The Times Union Center also hosts many similar events to the other theaters, however, the biggest differentiation is that this venue also hosts many of the sporting events that take place within the county. Theaters are not the only thing to do in Albany though, the New York State Museum, which is the largest and oldest state museum in the nation, is great resource for learning all about the State of New York.

The economy of the county has also been hit with a recent boom. Starting in the year 2000, Albany County and the surrounding area began to promote itself as a great area for the high-technology industry.

This has helped to bring in companies that deal in computer hardware, digital electronics, and nanotechnology which have all made tremendous strides in recent years and Albany County's Tech Valley continues to play an important role in those industries.
