The town of Niskayuna has been around since 1809 when it was shaped out of Watervliet. Later, in 1853, a portion of Schenectady was annexed to increase the size of the town. It is believed that the name “Niskayuna” is formed out of the original Native American tribe that previously settled the area, the “Conistigione.” No, we don't know how to pronounce that either or how “Niskayuna” came out of that. Originally believed to be a separate native American tribe, it was later discovered that the Conistigone were in fact part of the Mohawk tribe that was known by the term for the location that became Niskayuna. This word roughly translates to “extensive corn flats” which explains why Niskayuna originally developed as a farming town. Having its entire eastern and northern borders along the Mohawk river made those areas of Niskayuna great for cultivating crops and the first Dutch settlers took notice of this.

 

After World War II, a contract between the General Electric Company and the US Government established the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Niskayuna. Knolls Atomic is a research and development facility that is dedicated specifically to the support of US Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. The facility is responsible for the research, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of US nuclear-powered warships. The General Electric Company also has numerous other facilities in Niskayuna along the Mohawk River, making them one of the, if not the largest employer in the town.

 

Niskayuna does not have many references in pop culture, but the one that sparks the most controversy is the April 2019 episode of “The Simpsons” titled “D'oh Canada.” While the episode is mostly aimed at Canada, there is a song dedicated to dunking on Upstate New York set to the tune of New York, New York by Frank Sinatra. The song does not reference Niskayuna in the lyrics, but in the show, the family passes by a water tower emblazoned with “Niskayuna” that springs a leak as they drive by. While other areas of the state took harder hits in the show and song, some residents were upset that their town was represented poorly in the show. However, as of this writing, we cannot find any instance of the Niskayuna water tower leaking, so, checkmate Simpsons.

 

Starting in 1980 Niskayuna residents have celebrated Nisky-Day which is celebrated on the first Saturday after the third Friday in May. There are activities that take place as part of the tradition including an early morning family foot race, a parade, a fair, and fireworks. Each year does have a different theme though, last years theme was “Hats off to Nisky.” The event was started in response to a school district report on mental health needs and is always appreciated by residents and looked forward to fondly.
