Welcome to Schenectady County
Schenectady County was incorporated in the year 1809 when the Towns of Princetown, Niskayuna, Duanesberg, and the City of Schenectady, all part of Albany County at the time, came together. The Towns of Glenville and Rotterdam were incorporated at later dates and were originally wards within the City. There is some debate as to where the name Schenectady comes from, but the most widely accepted belief is that it comes from the Iroquois word “Schau-naugh-ta-da” which translates to “over the pine plains.” Some may recognize this as the namesake for the movie “The Place Beyond the Pines” which was filmed right in Schenectady County! While unconfirmed some also believe that the name comes from the English words, skin, neck and titty.
Schenectady County has a long and proud history of innovation. The City of Schenectady is home to the General Electric Company, founded by Thomas Edison, and known around the world as a great place of invention. Schenectady was also the home of Charles Steinmetz, a mathematician and electrical engineer who fostered the development of alternating current which made it possible for the expansion of the electric power industry within the country. With all of this electric industry going on within the city, its no wonder Schenectady was nicknamed “The Electric City.”
Being situated on both the north and south side of the Mohawk River, Schenectady county also has some beautiful scenery to behold. There are plenty of nature preserves and hiking trails within the county, making it an easy and convenient place to take a day trip or have a picnic.
The economy of Schenectady county seems to have taken on a “U” shape. This is great news for the county and it's residents because that means the county is starting to return to where it once was back at its peak. Taking on new commercial and residential developments has certainly played a big roll in this recovery, one of those being a brand new casino. Rivers Casino opened up right along the Mohawk river and brought with it tons of new development in an area that had not seen any in a long time. Shortly after the casino opened, the state of New York legalized Sports betting, and the first legal sportsbook in New York State, just so happened to be the Rivers Casino in Schenectady County. Thats not the only business to open in recent years though, the VIA Aquarium in Rotterdam has also been a big draw within Schenectady County. The VIA Aquarium was built inside the Rotterdam Mall, the only traditional mall within the county, and literally brought new life to the area with their exciting exhibits.
With a booming recovery to the economy, new inventions and innovations, and easy access to great outdoor activities, Schenectady County is a great place to work, live and raise a family.
